In the afternoon of March 28th, the launching ceremony of 2021 "The Beauty of Mathematics" π Festival was successfully held in the lecture hall oftheArchitecture and Art Museum. The Student Affairs Department minister Xiaoyao Zhong, the secretary of the CPC Committee at the School of Mathematics Renqing Fan, the deputy minister of the Student AffairsDepartment Jian Cui, and the deputy secretary Ting Wei of the Committee attended the ceremony. In addition, more than 200 students from the School of Mathematics attended the ceremony.
The opening ceremony of the π Festival kicked offwitha wonderful warm-up video. After Ying Ren, the secretary of the Youth League Committee of the School of Mathematics, announced the plan for this year’s π-Day activities, “The 2021 Top Ten College Students --Pi Star Award Ceremony” began. Ten “Pi stars” showed up at the stage, including “Pioneer π” Jiawei Li, “Friendπ” Yuanhao Liu and “Learning π” Yu Tang and so on. The invited guests presented awards to the winners. "Pioneer π" Jiawei Li made a speech on behalf of the commended students. He thanked the school and the university for the cultivation, and encouraged all students to cherish the moment and live in the present.
Professor Qingwen Wang from Shanghai University was invited to give a lecture on "Open the Garden of Eden of Mathematics." In the lecture, Prof. Wang introduced mathematics from five aspects: mathematics and its status, the relationship between mathematics and natural sciences, the profile of mathematics, the beauty of mathematics and the power of mathematical thoughts. Five concrete examples were presented for showing the discovery of mathematics results, including the discovery and generalization of quaternion, Avalokitesvara and bamboo sticks, thermometer, continuous function and intermediate value theorem, polynomial equality and Vieta theorem, and a variety of approaches leading to algebra.
At the end of the launching ceremony, Yujie Han, the deputy secretary of the Youth League Committee of the school, introduced the new media update of the school and released the mascot "π big scarlet". "Pi Gorilla" made a grand debut in the eyes of the students looking forward to. The image was designed by the year 2019 students of the School of Mathematics, symbolizing wisdom and kindness. The following comedy-style interaction with "π big scarlet" brought the atmosphere to another climax.
The π Festival is a mathematical culture dissemination activity at the School of Mathematics to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and to carry out in-depth study and education of the party history. The theme of this year's π festival is "The Beauty of Mathematics" which will last for one month. The planned activities include meeting "π," "π" fun games, "π" class garden party, "π" plan peer support, "π" party history, etc., and they centered around spreading the mathematical culture, the aesthetic education concept and form, innovative educational design, and hopefully constantly improve students' mathematical literacy and aesthetic ability.
